The life and music of Gregg Allman will be remembered at events in three cities – including his beloved Macon – in September.
“Southern Blood: Celebrating Gregg Allman” will take place Sept. 7 at the Clive Davis Theater at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. Allman’s son, Devon, along with longtime friend and manager Michael Lehman, producer Don Was (who worked on Allman’s final album, “Southern Blood”) and Gregg Allman Band guitarist and musical director Scott Sharrard will be together for an evening of stories, memories and music.
Tickets for the event will go on sale at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 10 for American Express cardholders and to the general public at noon Aug. 17. Visit www.grammymuseum.org.
Closer to Atlanta, on Sept. 9, Macon Mayor Robert Reichert will issue a proclamation to forever declare Allman’s birthday, Dec. 8, “Gregg Allman Day.” The musician will also be posthumously honored with the keys to the city where he is buried at a commemorative celebration at The Allman Brothers Band Museum at The Big House ((2321 Vineville Ave., Macon).
The night of Sept. 9, The Big House will host an event with Devon Allman, Lehman, Sharrard, Allman’s closest friend, Chank Middleton and Chuck Reece, editor of “The Bitter Southerner.” The event will be catered by H&H restaurant, a longtime Allman Brothers Band haunt that kept the band fed even in its lean years when they couldn’t afford payment.
Tickets are $25 and available at www.thebighousemuseum.com.
A third “Southern Blood: Celebrating Gregg Allman” gathering will take place at the 18th annual Americanafest, Sept. 15 at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Ford Theater in Nashville. Devon Allman and Lehman will be joined on stage by musicians Buddy Miller, Joan Osborne, Pony Bradshaw, John Paul White and Grammy Museum Executive Director Scott Goldman.
Allman’s “Southern Blood” album will be released Sept. 8. The album, which was completed before his death in May, is available for pre-order now at all major music retailers and the Gregg Allman Official Store.
